Spring Stroll in Squamish

OK, so its officially Spring... sort of. Despite the lack of sunshine, and continuing snowfall here on the West Coast, things are getting green, and I actually went out for an Oceanside walk in my T-Shirt yesterday.

Now that the snow is melted, I seem to be seeing more and more "green bags" laying everywhere around Squam. So here goes my vent to the dogowners of Squamish...

(ISN'T THIS A GREAT SIGHT - ITS GROWING WILD AROUND TOWN)

The green bags are provided for you to pick up your dogs crap. Why is the idea so hard to grasp, that the bags should then be carried to the nearest Dumpster or garbage can?????? If all you are doing is picking up said crap, then tossing it into the nearest tree, why dont you just bring a stick and flick it off the trail? I'd rater see some dried up poop around the trail edge, then hundreds of green baggies. BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER.. Use the bags the way they are meant to be used. Next time I see a dog owner throwing a bag off the trail or into a tree, I am going to follow them and throw one of my babies used diapers into their backyard or car... Or better yet grab their green bag and deposit it at the front door of their house, car, or garden.

IDIOTS. PERIOD.

Anyway, the rest of the walk I ignored the green bags and looked at the beauty surrounding my home. Including a zoom in of a new snowboard zone that will get hit soon....

Thinking about Travelling again....

Every time I open my image folders and scan across some travel shots I get the urge to get on a plane. Just looking for a few old shots today and came across some travel shots from New Zealand in 2009. NZ is a special place, if you have a chance I suggest going! These shots were taken on a few day trip from Wanaka, up the West Coast, to Punakaiki, New Zealand.

Rainy Day in Squamish

There have been far to many down days this winter, and today was just another day of wet to add to the already long winter season. I've been planning a few portrait sessions, and decided today was a day for prep... Yes, rain is falling so its a perfect day for a project...

I've always wanted a ringflash, but the price was never something I could justify adding to my already overflowing bags of gear that I dont use enough.

Luckily the internet is full of tips and treasures for the DIY'ers out there...
I gave myself a $30 budget split between the dollar store and walmart to see what i could do. At the end of an hour in the garage, I came up with 2 ringlight attachments to pop onto my Canon speedlight. I also had purchased some other gear for a beauty dish, that may get built tomorrow..

Anyway I'm pretty happy with how they seem to work, here are a couple of testers- Still need to finish them up and spray on some matte Black on the inner cones, but otherwise a cheap way to add to the portrait kit.

Yesterday was one of the warmest days I have felt up in the Alpine around Whistler. I was out shooting with Bjorn Leines, and Lucas Debari for the day. Unfortunately like the old song gies.. "...a day late, a buck short..." Seems that Terje, Blauvelt and Freddy K got to the spot a day earlier and didn't leave us much to choose from...actually they tore the place a new one. We were left with almost nothing after a 20+km woop-ed out sled ride into this spot.

Bjorne spotted a mellow drop to chute, and decided to hike the ridge to get a shot.. We had looked at the cornice overhang from the bottom, and seemed to all think it was manageable and that it could be passed on the backend. As Bjorn was hiking I seemed to get a guy feeling that he might be a bit close. I lowered my camera a bit and reached for my radio, and just as I was about to call him the entire cornice gave way. I managed to get a few shots off as the snow remaining on the cliff cascaded off, and luckily Bjorn was quick to jump back a couple feet when it started and was on a "safe spot"

The ridge up high was very thin, so the warm temps, and baking sun inside a milky overcast sky must have heated the think upper backend of the cornice, and all it took was a light-footed step to trigger.

We were lucky, but good warning to everyone that its Springtime, so watch out for Cornices on those hot days!

Just a little show.

Figured I would post this so it didn't just go away on my hard drive unwatched. A couple days before the entries for the pro photo showdown were due I decided I should make an attempt. Unfortunately I was headed on the road to the midwest, and didnt have much with me on my laptop. ( Plenty of shots of my boy Eli, but I am guessing the judges don't consider baby photos as any kind of action sport) I used the shots I had on my computer and my "sent" email items to put this entry together. I didnt make the cut, but thought you might like watching! Stoked that Yosh, Dalbs and Bryn are all in for this year along with a few others.. Going to be all time!

On a positve note, I'm now going through a bunch of last years shots and some new stuff to prep another show.. Might even give a preview on here to hear your thoughts! Anyone care to give me a final cut lesson, and show me how to edit music as well?

One of the better days out...

Yesterday was one of those days I wish would happen every day I head out shooting. Not only did I happen to be with a great group of friends, but the stormy morning sky opened up and gave us a beautiful sunny day. We ventured a bit further back in a well known zone and found a great stash of amazing snow, found some sweet features to session, and everyone did a few pow runs just for fun. We stayed up till sunset, and everyone left stoked. Thanks crew, it was a pleasure!

I keep saying I will post old shots more often. I hope to, really I do. Time is just slipping away so quickly.
Anyway Managed to be able to do a few runs with some friends on Whistler a few days ago.. one of whom I rarely have a chance to hang with Mr. Dennis Bannock. A couple summers back in NZ I convinced him I had a shot we needed to get. He obliged.. despite having to bomb into a spring-slush frozen solid garbage 1/4 pipe in complete darkness, he also had to get blinded by my flashes and some halos from the snowcat. I wish it got published somewhere. but it didnt. Dennis asked me where it ended up. My Hard-drive was the only answer, until now.

Mt.Hood on a bus

Had a last minute trip to shoot an exciting new product at Mt.Hood this past week. More to come later on the brand/product..

We took a bus from Vancouver. I have not been on a bus for a trip for a very long time. It was nice to see so much and relax without having to drive.

Oregon is a pretty sweet State.

US truck stop gas stations are amazing..

Mt.Hood was raining one day and Blue and hot the next. It was pretty good times...

A little spot up the road..

I went for a drive yesterday. I don't know why, but I always think better when I am driving.. no distractions from life, especially if where you drive also has no cell reception. It happened to be raining, so my plan to find a calm spot and snap a few images turned into looking for enough tree cover to get the camera out.

There is a perfect place I know just up the road... Years of hard work, Color, Creativity, and words of thought... they all are part of this little spot.

I might not get to keep coming back to this escape much longer so I decided to take a few photos, and think about the future.

- Eli Wayne Patterson was born @ 9:07 am on Sunday March 28th at the Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver BC, 8 pounds 8 ounces!

Right from first light ( well, after a bit of suction, and a wipe down) he seemed to really want to take a good look at the world! we feel really blessed and happy!

Early Mornings = Long Days

This past week we had beautiful weather for 4 days in a row. With "Spring" here, the days are very, very long up in the alpine. The light hits some of the zones starting at 6:30am, and you can stay out shooting till 7 or a bit later to get sunset glows.

After a few days like that, the poor weather is a welcome change. Not to mention it brings more snow up high to play in on the next sunny break!

Oldies but Goodies Part 1....

I started to clean out a few old hard drives today. It used to be that I would throw away all my slides that did not make the "A" cut. Now I have so many digital files they are hard to track. I have gotten better at cataloging and archiving my images in the past few years, but looking back makes me wonder how many I just passed over.

There are so many images that you never get to see printed each year. I think now with the ease of websites I will try to get out as many of the oldies I like as I can for the riders who were involved, their friends and family to enjoy and everyone else who is interested.

Don't expect them to come every day... I'm not that dedicated!

It’s time to honor the heros.

It’s been several days now since the tragic avalanche at Turbo Hill. The latest reports are that two are deceased and three are still hospitalized. The media is also reporting that there were 200 snowmobilers at Turbo at the time of the slide. The avalanche is reported to have been up to 150 meters wide and 10 meters deep. That, my friends, is a BIG avalanche!

I’d like to put some perspective on this – a snowmobiler’s perspective. Apparently no one in the media is a snowmobiler or is concerned about taking the time to gather the facts – not just the bad, but the good as well. And there is good to be heard in this story. If you ask a snowmobiler – they’d be able to tell you what that is. But either the media isn’t asking, or has heard it and doesn’t feel that the facts are newsworthy.

However, I feel these facts are the MOST newsworthy topic of this entire tragedy.

Saturday afternoon, following the close of the events for the annual Big Iron Shootout, a large group of snowmobilers headed to Turbo Bowl to make a run at the hill. As the riders lined up at the bottom of the hill, the mass of spectators parked their sleds and prepared to enjoy the show. As one of the sleds turned out towards the top, the hillside gave way. Thundering down the mountain it came – taking sleds and riders with it. This powerful act of nature happens in a split second. There is no time to react.

The time to react is as soon as it stops. And react – with speed and knowledge – in the midst of chaos – is what those sledders did. There were no typical first responders to this catastrophe in the immediate moments following the avalanche. Only snowmobilers. Those same snowmobilers that the media is painting with a broad stroke as crazy, ignorant, thrill-seekers.

As a back country snowmobiler myself, I can tell you that ignorant is not a word that I would use to describe those survivors. I would call them heroes! And justly so. In the midst of what may have been the most terrifying minutes of their lives, they turned their avalanche beacons to search, they got out their probes and their shovels and they started rescue protocols IMMEDIATELY – likely while in a state of shock. They dug out those that were buried, they triaged the injured, they administered first aid, they built fires to keep them warm until the helicopters arrived. These people were heroic!! Without their quick and educated responses, many more people would have died.

I am angered that the media is so eager to report this story that they are being so disgraceful to the victims and survivors. These people need support and compassion. They do not need to be stereotyped and degraded in the media or by anyone else. Shame on you!! Didn’t your mother teach you better manners than that?

I’m not done though – there is way more information about snowmobilers in respect to the Big Iron Shootout and Revelstoke that the media hasn’t covered yet. While they gleefully report that this is an unsanctioned (I’ll get to that in a moment) event drew 200 sledders (despite the grave warnings from the avalanche center), what they aren’t telling you is that there are likely double that number of snowmobilers who DIDN’T attend this year’s event – because of the conditions. Snowmobilers who DID heed the warnings.

As I was reading the snowmobiling forums and Facebook on Saturday evening, the same story continued to repeat itself – people concerned about friends who generally attend the BIS, those friends checking in and saying they didn’t go this year, or they were in the area but avoided Turbo Bowl because of the warnings and the conditions they were already aware of. You see, back country snowmobilers are often in the back country two or more days a week and already have first hand insight to the conditions.

Regarding the word being used in almost every story – unsanctioned. It is true that there is no sanctioning organization for this event. Not the town of Revelstoke nor the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club. However, just because it’s not sanctioned does not mean that it is illegal.

Snowmobilers often gather in large groups to ride with friends who are generally dispersed all over Canada and the United States. I personally rode with a group of 30 riders at an “unsanctioned” event in Wyoming. Oops! I also rode at another “unsanctioned” event, ummm, better make that two, here in Oregon. Rest assured, I am not a criminal nor are any of the snowmobilers that I know.

The internet keeps the snowmobiling community connected. There are 1,000s of unsanctioned events that simply start by someone saying, “hey – who wants to ride this weekend?” Next thing ya know, word spreads about how much fun everyone had and it snowballs from there (pun intended). They grow into these annual events…”same date next year?”

So, here’s what happens next – the date is set. Motel rooms are reserved. Trucks and sleds are fueled. Vacation time is requested. Then individuals, families and social groups all head into a remote mountain town. They buy. They buy. They buy a lot!! They spend money – because they can.

It is with great sadness that I have to dispel the myth that mountain snowmobilers are a bunch of rednecks. All you really need to do is add up the costs to outfit an individual – much less an entire family – with a sled and the proper safety gear. Since this article is really targeted at those individuals who are not mountain sledders, I will point out that everything – got that?…EVERYTHING, on your person and on your sled is part and parcel of your survival gear. From your gloves, to your coat, to the sunglasses in your backpack. Trying to save a dime in buying a coat is really not advised, when that coat may be the only thing protecting you from the elements if you have to stay overnight. With all that said, here’s a run down of estimated costs of the primary accessories needed to sled in the back country.

• Sled $6,000-$14,000 USD
• Clothes (including base, mid and outer layers – top & bottom) $800-$1,200 USD
• Boots/gloves/helmet $245-$800 USD
• Backpack (non-avy) $60-$120 USD
• Backpack (avy) $1,000-$1,200 USD
• Body armor (tek vest, knee pads, etc) $60-$300 USD
• Beacon, probe, shovel $250-$400 USD

This doesn’t include a lot of items, such as matches, radios, compass, fire starter, flashlight, and the list goes on, and the costs add up. It would be GREATLY appreciated if the media would STOP perpetuating the myths that sledders are ignorant, beer-swilling, couch-potatoes. Because it’s simply not true.

The fact is that mountain sledders do not fit a stereotypical mold. They come from all areas of the business world…from CEOs to millworkers. They have families and they are single. They are old and they are young. They are world-class athletes and they are physically handicapped. They survive corporate down-sizing, cancer, divorces, etc….just like everyone else.

The thing that binds us together is our great love for the back country in the winter. We are modern day adventurers. We want to get out there – in the mountains. We want to explore and play and wonder at the beauty. We love the snow! When it covers the trees, when it flies up in our faces, when it gives us a playground of vast proportions. That is when we are in heaven. That is when our souls glow.

We are not anything that the media will have tried to make us out to be in the last couple of days. We are so much more. It’s truly a pity that the media isn’t interested in shining any light on the truth.

The truth is - the Turbo Bowl avy survivors are HEROS. We in the snowmobiling communities – far and wide – are praying for the full recovery of those injured, in body and in spirit. And finally, with great compassion and sympathy we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who perished.

I wrote this and I am Susie Rainsberry, Oregon resident, back-country snowmobiler. I provide free and complete liberty for others to share and disperse this message. The time has come to stop the slandering of good individuals just because they ride snowmobiles.

Where did winter go?

After a few weeks in Japan, coming home to the coast of BC in "Summer" like conditions was a bit difficult. Crazy warm conditions have been causing havoc with avy conditions across BC, and nobody seems to be getting any snow.

Today, things in Squamish seem to be changing - woke up to rain, and a bit cooler... hopefully meaning that we will see some snowfall coming up high.

I've been in my office editing images from Japan all day...

Japan is crazy. Amazing sites, great food, huge cities, huge snowfall, Japanimation hairdoos, Harajuku Sundays, and strange plastic figurines in vending machines....

Japan-o-rama part 2

The crew at Black Diamond Lodge in Niseko have been awsome, and we have been getting shots daily just driving around and taking short walks off the highway! We did however decide to go do a day of riding up on mountain on the Niseko United resorts. The snow was fun, and the Apres' at the huge all you can eat Buffet in the Hilton hotel in Hirafu was outstanding.

With some warm weather hitting Niseko we geared up and drove North to a resort that I cannot mention right now.....

We arrived late to the Gondola... 2:30 pm to be square.. and there were a whole 5 other cars in the parking lot. ( Considering at least 2-3 were for employees.... you can imagine how many people were on mountain.

Stepping off the gondola, we rode knee deep blower powder through steep trees.....Yes, thats right... UNTRACKED, BLOWER at 2:30 in the afternoon... AND THE MOUNTAIN TO OURSELVES!!!!

The little town is celebrating a sort of "ice festival" with huge sculptures built in the river valley just below town, It was an amazing site, after 3 of the best runs of our trip.

Today was the crews last riding day, we are just now in Sapporo for an evening, then off for 3 days of excitment and tourist activities in Tokyo!

Are the Olympics almost over???

We have all decided that the last little resort Gem will need a bit more attention on our next visit to Japan....

Turning Japanese

I'm in Niseko Japan right now with a small crew for Snowboard Canada Magazine.
There is more snow on the ground here than almost anywhere I have ever seen.
We have been driving and looking for roadside features to shoot. So far we are just settling in to Black Diamond Lodge as our base. ( www.bdlodge.com )

COP - Burton Canadian Open Slopestyle

After a week of waiting for good weather around Whistler, I was pretty happy to get a call from Liam @ Burton to come shoot the Canadian Open up in Calgary. The weather for Friday and saturday was unbelievable. With the Olympics just days away I was excited to see some of the worlds best throwing down on the slopestyle course, and in COP's 22 foot superpipe.

Canadians had strong representation in both events:

- Justin Lamoureux placed 2nd in the pipe finals with crazy technical runs.

On his 2nd semi finals run he took my new GOPRO HD movie camera for a run strapped on his chest... check it here: www.justinlamoureux.blogspot.com you'll notice on his first hit the screen goes black...doing the exact same trick pictured in the shot above.....

- Sarah Conrad and Mercedes Nicholl both earned spots of the podium for the girls with great runs!

- Dustin Craven qualified in 2nd but just couldn't hold it together in the finals to make a top spot.

- Jon Versteeg from Pemberton took 2nd in the slopestyle, and I have to say he is one of the most stylish and talented jumpers I have seen in a long time.

- Canmore's own Robby Balharry claimed 3rd in the slopestyle with very impressive style and a bag of tricks! Robby opened a few eyes through the week making his way in from early pre-qualifiers, semi finals, and into finals against the heavy hitters!

On a plane back to Vancouver.. a few days at home.... then off to Japan with a crew from Sandbox films

Christmas is coming...

...and I'm making room on my walls and in my home. Sooo.. I'm going to be posting prints for sale off and on for the next while. The first one is a shot of Golden BC's Justin Baun, high speed powder turn in the alpenglow @ Chatter Creek Lodge BC. ( 2001 ). This shot is printed 24" x 36" on stretched canvas over a 3/4" wooden frame for hanging on your wall. Originally this image was printed for an Auction / door prize for a great buddy and somehow I lucked out getting it back when all was said and done - it has been on my wall for the past year or so, but time to mix it up.

I've only made one print of this image - after it appeared in a Snowboard Canada Feature years ago, and do not plan on printing another. I will email photos of the actual print if you would like to see.

Yes, my original iphone bit the dust on a recent trip.. so I dropped in on a new "old" 8gb Iphone. Its nice to be able to hit the app store and play with all the gadgets and add-ons the phone apps offer.

First I uploaded a program called Tilt Shift Gen.. makes some cool "tilt-shit" camera effects - so far my favorite application.

Next up on the apps was Quadcam --- pretty cool "lomo - esque" style images in rapid fire.. Now I would say my 2nd favorite Iphone Camera application... This shot and the next, just out for a walk / bike ride with my wife in some great Fall Colors of Squamish.

All the "latest" and "greatest" of halfpipe riding had me thinking about the way its progressed the past few years. Then I started to remember a few standouts that may have been ahead of their time. Its a common thought that a person can only get out above the lip of a halfpipe as high as the wall.. so a 14 foot pipe highest air would be 14 feet. This shot was taken in during the last held Westbeach classic contest on Blackcomb. The pipe was 12 feet high. Mike went higher than 12 feet that day, and did a double backflip. this is a frame on his second of the rotations.. on his way back down.How he did that?? I dont know. He somehow mastered transitions I suppose. The sequence of this was one of my first published shots....

Pretty sweet... wonder what Mike thinks about todays pipe antics?

Trouble at the Airport... almost.. whew!

Well, I was about to write a long blog about how I ALMOST didn't make it on the plane due to my Elinchrome Ranger lighting kit looking suspect. It was opened and then the security staff in Auckland decided that the battery contained was not proper for flight, and to their knowledge had to be a Panasonic battery to be safe for flight...
Anyway long story short, I convinced them otherwise, and they let me on. I googled the issue, and the first thing up is a great write up by DAN CARR - READ IT HERE where he went through the EXACT same thing at the same airport. But he had it sorted. You could benefit if your a photographer flying with a light kit.

Sunset @ Snowpark

The other night up at the Snowpark Resort outside Wanaka I was witness to one of the most epic sunsets ever. The lead up to the full epic was also quite amazing. Unfortunately due to one snowmobile blowing a belt, and a second crew coming to session. Things got complicated. Too many people, not enough sleds.. Too much camera and flash gear. My elinchrome Ranger setup was popping for the hour lead up without any issues. Suddenly when a second flash setup from the other photographer was put up directly beside mine, both my setup and his started mis-firing, or just not firing at all. FRUSTRATING.. different channels - still no reason why. Changed batteries, still not working. Possibly was due to distance, but since Pocket Wizards advertise that they should work at a range about 5x longer than where I was standing (AND HAS NEVER ACTUALLY WORKED FOR ME AT ANYWHERE NEAR THAT RANGE) and absolutely nothing between me and the receiver - there was no real reason for any of the issues.

Anyway, missed some amazing shots. Bummed as its been one of the only times I have had a shoot work out weather wise in 5 weeks.

More down days from snow. Actually just finding more to do than snow...
Explored the West Coast for a few days.
Went South as far as the road went.... beautiful drive.

There was supposed to be a great place to eat there... but it was not open. There was also supposed to be colonies of Penguins there as well... all we could find was sketch beach shanty towns, and this rusty tractor.

So we continued north to yet another place Lonely Planet says is "all time" for penguins. Hiked in 45 minutes, and found only colonies of tiny biting black flies. BUt it was really nice as well...

Further North, we made it up to Fox Glacier and walked in to the ice there... Then up the road for a view of Franz Josef.

Finally finished the day in Punakaiki "Pancake Rocks"

Slept in the car overnight on the Arthurs Pass road, and awoke to KEA birds tearing apart the car, so took back to the road.

Now in a nice hotel in Christchurch for a shower and a night in the city!

Back in New Zealand... I LOVE this place.

Wanaka has changed alot since my first trip here in 1994. The downtown big air/ ripcurl heli has come and gone, and now may be here again.. But will never be the same as the parking lot at BARROWS. If you know what Barrows was, then you know what I am talking about.
Anyway, here are a few from the past week adventures...

Pat Bridges - Editor of Snowboarder Magazine said this inprint a couple years ago. If you have seen Scotts' plethora of handplant tricks, you would have to agree. I on the other hand think he has one of the best POWDER turns in the world... so... I guess he is a really damn good snowboarder. I was going to show a bunch of images of him Jumpin... but that will have to be another post. Wait.... If he is that good at HANDPLANTING, POW, AND JUMPING.... Why is he not getting paid by a bunch of people? Simple answer is... Scott rides because its fun!

--- Although I am sure he would love a big pay cheque for doing it.

Many would say he is one of the most Under-rated snowboarders in the world... So. You do the math. He has a list of "best of's"....

Treehouse Ewok Village style..

Somewhere up the Squamish Valley is a beautiful piece of land with an amazing view. Actually the views up the Squamish Valley are all quite amazing...
This spot though, is very unique. Working most of the time alone, and some of the time with the help of a few friends lured with cold beverages and big smiles.... This particular land owner is doing something different.

Posted up above his solar-powered, live in Airstream trailer is a huge hillside filled with tall giants. Last summer a few of these giants started to be transformed. The plan will be completed in time, but slowly is becoming a site from old movies... Ewok Village...

Walking paths from a steep bank, out to platforms in the trees, complete with staircases, a bathroom, cooking area... Yes..

Of course these things are not completed yet. The masterplan is not quite worked out.. But as you can see - It IS underway.

So.. How do you feel about sleeping in a treehouse swaying in the wind 50 feet in the air with a million dollar view???

TJ and Kitty

So its been almost 2 seasons since I was able to get out and shot shred shots with TJ. He has been so busy traveling the world, somehow our paths have not crossed. I was finally able to connect with him a couple weeks ago on his way up to coach at Camp of Champions. He stopped by my place to do a few portraits, and brought along his dog Kitty.
Its good catching up with old friends... funny when some of them live so close but everyones timelines are so different.

Tj is a talented man - check his board graphics, tshirt designs, art and photography... not to mention the countless side projects. Most people will have no problems finding out anything on TJ. His life is an open book... blogging it up, or making himself available on one of the numerous websites out there.

So.. to be different I just pulled some random interview questions from the intronet.. sent them to TJ and said I was blogging....He was back to me faster than flys on .... well, you know.

A day at the beach

Yes, a great Sunday. Went for a hike, swam across a lake.. sat in the sun. Everything was all good till a gust of wind lifted off our floaters, and wham... things go bad. I hopped across some rocks, tore off my hat and sunglasses, and proceeded to slam my toe into gnarly sharp rocks. no more toenail, and alot of skin gone. ouch.
Home now, beer in hand.... foot throbbing...

With winter ending, it was time for a break to somewhere warm and sunny. So.... headed over to Hawaii for some "work". Spent 8 days touring around Oahu, exploring beaches, trails, some snorkeling, a couple of dives, and worked on getting "tanned". Or - as any redheads know means I worked on staying out of the sun as much as I could in between small stints of burning.

My wife Jamie managed lots of tanning time, while I hid from sun or went snorkelling.

Yup, I am a slacker this year. I have made 1 submission so far - and currently "JUST" finished my taxes. Now I am back on the retina burnout to edit, name, and sort images for the upcoming magazine submissions. I forget the images I take sometimes. More often than not, I miss the "one" till i have looked it over 10x and think I have nothing to show for the season of work.

Canon 45mm 2.8 Tilt Shift, as new condition with lens hood, box, manuals, and un-filled warranty card. $1100 CAN$$$

Canon 300.. 2.8 non-IS, this optics on this lens are great, no scuffs or scratches at all. The body has wear in all the key use spots, around the collar, and has been used. Could use a couple new mini screws for the lock mounts of the Lens Hood, but not necessary. Also comes with a Lowepro Soft Lens Case. - $2000.00 CAN$$

Canon Eos 1D mrk 2 body, with 3 aftermarket batteries, and 1 BRAND NEW CANON battery only been charges 1 time. Camera has the usual wear spots from use and being in a backpack. The upper LCD backlight screen light does not work -( screen readout is fine, but the orange glow light does not) only an issue at Night, I just use a headlamp when i was shooting in the dark - $1250.00 CAN$$$

Winter Camping in Alaska

OK, so I have been home almost a week now. Sorry its taken some time to get this up and going - been busy catching up with real life.

Anyway, 10 days in a tent for me..

Some longer like Mr.Pendygrasse here who spent 28 days in at camp.

It was pretty epic learning how to Splitboard in Alaska, with Jonaven Moore, Scott Newsome, Jeremy Jones, and Travis Rice. Wow, what a crew.

Here is a shot of Gary getting set up to film a line across the valley in a zone the crew from Canada named "Boris Basin" after our old friend GT.

Amazing views up there.......

Damn 686 toolbelt....

Yep... I'm on a bitch session here. I have owned / worn my trusty 686 studded toolbeltnow for 6+ years. During these years I have flown all over Canada, the US, New Zealand, Japan, Europe, the UK, yes.. you get the idea. Each time I have taken off my belt, thrown it in the tray though airport security, and put er back on when I got through the other side.

Now I dont imagine anyone "looks" evil or like a threat to these paid professionals that scan our baggage.. but today I must have looked like a really bad dude. For some reason I am pulled aside, my stuff looked through ( funny as its the first time in a long time I haven't had a big heavy bag of camera gear... and the power tripping security guy (not this guy, but hey.fun) says, YOU CANNOT TAKE THIS BELT ON THE AIRLINE!!!!

I was shocked... stunned actually... Why I thought... because its got studs??? Then it hits me... "toolbelt" yep.. mr.smarty pants saw the micro phillips head on my belt, and sent me packing.. You can go to 7-11 and ship it to yourself he says.

OK, so then it gets interesting.... The lady at the end of the counter looks it over, and hands it back to me.. says " Take it this time, just dont fly with it again" Whew, I think to myself...

So I go to the belt, grab my coat and bag, put my laptop back in the bag, thread my belt through my pants and start to walk away... then a voice shouts out .."WHERE IS THE BUCKLE SIR???"

I turned around, and said in my most polite tone, I;'m sorry, she said it was fine this time - pointing to the nice lady at the end of the counter...

"NO, THIS IS A TOOL!! he grabs my belt, pulls it apart and proceeds to walk away with my belt parts.... Meanwhile, my pants are falling down, and now I am a bit frustrated at the whole scenario.

Seriously? I ask, "I really cannot believe that in 5 or 6 years of flying, and numerous times through this same process its been ok, and today it is not?"

"Can I please have my belt, I'll just go back outside and check my bag"

Mr.Dumbasssnarls at me, and gives my belt parts back.. as he does I ask if he has a piece of string to tie up my pants...

He was not happy. neither was I.

I wish people in positions like his were not such power tripping a-holes sometimes. I understand he was doing his job. Fine, but why today?

I hate airports. I guess I could have taken the plane apart piece by piece with my dangerous pocket tool - good thing he stopped me hahahah , awsome!

Good thing I found a seat, cause now I have no bag, a book, a laptop, a camera, and pants that will not stay up... fun walk through the airport.

Pocket Snappers

The Canon G10 has been at my side for the last few months. With so many "extras" that are not offered up by the big pro SLR cameras, I really haven't been experimenting with what is offered - mainly because I have not had the time to play.

Last week out in Calgary, I was bored and decided to take a few shots, using the "wide" mode, and trying out the different film and color settings. I'm pretty happy with the outcome, and I think the "wide' format is pretty cool.

I know you could do the same effects in Lightroom or Photoshop, but its nice to actually see the results on the screen as you shoot.

I thought I was going to get away without shooting a single handrail all season, but my plan was sidetracked. So I am in Calgary shooting handrails today. Its the first time in years I've done it without the -20 to -40 temps that usually come with a Calgary jib trip. fun fun fun.

Joe SextonJoe wears some off the most redic. looking tight pants out of anyone I know that rides a snowboard... I bug him, but he rocks em pretty legit I suppose. The last couple days I've been in the backcountry with the Stepchild crew. I have been looking at every peak and bowl we go near with more respect than I have been in the past few years... I suppose being in that position for awhile after an avalanche does its thing, is ultimately a positive - and helps me remember how small we are compared to mother nature.

Anyway, I asked Joe to make a pow slasher at the end of one day.... This was the day the Raven was circling overhead... and the day an Avaanche took an old buddy.

I am glad Joe did this... this is why I love snowboarding, for moments like this...

Losing friends to the mountains....

Years ago. while I was in my teenage years growing up around Cranbrook BC, there were only a small crew of snowboarders in the Valley. As we started to compete and travel a bit we were the "older kids" of the group. One of the groms at the time was "Little Clay"... he was a quiet, shy, short little ripper, who was always happy to be riding.. but never said much. His parents, or one of our crew always brought him up to the contests, and we all shredded together on the local stomping grounds in Kimberley.

Through the years Clay managed to grow up a bit... spoke up a little more often, and still was always happy playing in the snow. Like the rest of us, the natural progression of being in the snow playing led to Snowmobiles and backcountry powder hunting....

Yesterday I spent my day out in the mountains shooting. It was a beautifull day, blue sky, light dry powder snow..... seemingly perfect. At one point in the late afternoon I watched a big raven circling around where we were in those peaks. I have always been a believer that seeing Ravens in the mountains means some fallen mountain friend is watching over you... But it always makes me wonder who, and why?

At the days end, my phone came into reception from the backroads up the Squamish Valley, and almost immediatley I recieved one of those calls you never want to hear... -that call told me our old buddy Clay had been taken from us in an avalanche outside of Kimberley.

This past week I have witnessed a slide that shook me up pretty badly. I have posted, pleaded, and asked all my friends to make sure they played safe... But Mother Nature does not always play fair.

Clay, we will all miss you buddy, and thanks for watching out for us yesterday.

Just got an email update from my Mom - seems in his old age, My old man can still teach those hockey players a thing or two. Dad's team won the league championship this past weekend in the UK. he was named coach of the year in his teams league yesterday. Today was a good day to be back at home.

Today we had a great "Heli-Lunch" day with the MSP crew... Landed, and as the guide dug a pit, we all felt the ground settle a few inches, and watched a slab release 3 feet below our guide digging that said pit. For 2 hours we sat on the peak.. hearing avy's ripping down the valleys, settling all over.. then heli'd outta there. so sketchy.

History Lesson.... Does anyone reading my blog remember the great Whiskey shred Videos?? I would hope you do... Bzowy ripped em up smashin bottles on his head, and doubling as a clown. He was also a major contributor to my shortened lifespan due to partying back in the Banff days while working at the Outtabounds bar..

So its snowing up high...
Pretty stoked winter came, even though its about 3 months to late.
So I am editing all day to allow me to go shoot tomorrow. Hopefully get in some noboarding.....
I finally figured out how to delete my iphone photos today. so here is a curry i made...dont know why i decided to post it. I love Curry I guess.

I'm getting good at the drive across BC. Just did 4 days at Island Lake Lodge for asbc magazine feature. It was amazing times.. images will come soon.
I wish I could put my truck on autopilot...
But then would miss crazy things on the roadside like this...

In my last posting I mentioned an analogy based on a playground. Not thinking it through.. used the word sandbox.. and had someone mention that could be a call out to the Sandbox Productions guys. To make all who read my blog aware... if you read the blog, there were at least 3 crews that day playing follow the leader. If I was going to call someone out, it would be all.. not just one - Especially a crew I work with sometimes.

Anyway these guys ride on the SANDBOX crew, Brendan Keenan looking creepy,

and one of Mikey Pederson not quite as creepy...

and this foreigner Jake Koia who also rides his skiboard while being filmed by Sandbox.

Anyway, in the future I will try to be more in tune with what I write so I do not offend anyone - and if I am calling in/out/ or otherwise it will be highlighted with a LINK....

Alternatively, I will just keep on posting, links to things if I mean to. I could spend an entire l ifetime doing this and probably still get called a Redheaded stepchild, but I am willing to try my best. I love you all, and I would be willing to run 8 Miles for you to prove it- although it would have to be split up into many days since I have not run more than a Km since Highschool, and that was just after elementary school when we all played in the Sandbox building castles.

Blunt used to be my favorite Snowboard Magazine. It was published by the makers of the mens magazine Hustler. Anyway, it didn't last long. Its too bad, because it was refreshing to read what people really thought. Anyway, this is the back cover of the new Stepchild Snowboards catalog for 2009. Parody cover... and shot just down the road from my house in one of the cool little Japanese Import cars I brought in called a Figaro! Stoked on this one.

Yep, its once again raining in Squamish. Its hard to complain after having a dry "winter" that we are finally getting rained on. I think the freezing level is up around 1400-1700 the next few days. The heavy wet snow will be a blessing and a curse. The frost that was building in the alpine in the last snow-less month caused some big avy's to tear out the last few clear days... so hopefully this snow heavy load on top will strip that crap out of there and let us breath a bit easier on the next clear days. A few days back we broke into the alpine at a popular sled zone here in BC. With 3 new sleds, we got up... broke the trail into the zone, and broke another zone up in the area to shoot. It was suprising to me the lack of class, drive, and creativity of some crews. They followed our tracks into the zone, into the lake, and then proceeded right up our pack trail, and built jumps directly beside us on the ridge... GO FIND YOU OWN ZONE YOU DAMN SHEEP. Within an hour there was 3 crews on the same ridge.. it was the most stupid thing I have witnessed in the backcountry ever. One massive zone... and everyone focused on what we broke into. One big Playground, and everyone playing one the swings in the corner. Luckly the crew I was with got the h outta there and found our own zones to hit.

Its finally winter again. Or maybe its just starting. Either way, I had a few good days, and looks like an epic week of snow is on the way. The past 2 days I've been out with the TW video crew Mikey, Eero, and Benji.. Its been a blast. Deep and Blue.
